Sony to launch Android, iOS apps for PlayStation 4 second screen experience

Thursday 21 February 2013

Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 this week… or at least some aspects of the next-gen game console. We still don’t actually know what it will look like, for instance. But one thing we do know is that in addition to adding a faster processor,  a new game controller, and support for cloud-based gaming services, Sony is going to let you use your Android or iOS phone or tablet to interact with the PS4.

For instance, you could pull up a map for the game you’re playing on your iPad, or buy a game from your smartphone and have it automatically downloaded and ready to play when you get home.
You can also use your phone to watch games that your friends are playing in real-time.
The PlayStation App isn’t meant to replace your game console — but to offer new ways to interact with it.
In other words, Sony isn’t trying to compete with Android-based game consoles like the Ouya or GameStick devices which use Android-based hardware to play Android-based games.
The PS4 is more like a high-powered gaming PC with an AMD 8-core Jaguar processor, a high-powered Radeon graphics engine, and 8GB of RAM. Something tells me PS4 games will look a little better than Ouya games — and they’ll likely cost a lot more too.
