Ian MORRISON (linuxium) has tested Linux with several mini PCs powered by different processors. The main point of his tests was to evaluate the performance difference between running Ubuntu 12.04 natively, or in a chroot in Android using tools such as Complete Linux Installer. I previously tried<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Linux on Android in ODROID-X, and found the applications start time when running from an low-end SD card pretty dismal, and the graphics performance poor. Ian had a different approach, and decided to use a subset of Phoronix Suite benchmarks to compare different hardware / software combination and posted the results in<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://plus.google.com/109451178006683865932/posts/DPrg7Anp1xU" style="color: #2970a6; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">“mini PCs” G+ community</a>. There’s a lot of data, and analyzing the results is not really straightforward without spending some time looking at the data. In this post, I’ll explain how the tests have been conducted, explain the results and try to draw a conclusion.</div>

Ian used four mini PC hardware running Ubuntu 12.04 natively or in a chroot installed with Complete Linux Installer, except for RK3066 mini PC where Ubuntu 12.10 (PicUntu) was run natively. Each time, LXDE desktop environment was setup, and Ubuntu was installed in Sandisk Extreme Pro 8GB (micro) SD cards.</div>

Results and Conclusion</h2>

So I’ve added an up arrow icon on the left of the table if higher is better, and a down arrow if it’s the opposite. I’ve also added Android and Ubuntu logos, depending on whether Ubuntu is respectively run in a chroot or natively.</div>

Linux Benchmark Results for Mini PCs, and some reference hardware (Click to Enlarge)</div>
</div>
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Let’s take care of the anomalies first. You’ll notice GMPbench results are not available for all devices. That’s because it refused to run in some cases. SQLite test results are up to 10x faster in Ubuntu in a chroot (in Android) than in Ubuntu running natively. MK802 is even reported to be about as fast as Intel PC used as reference. Clearly something is wrong when running this test in a chroot, and SQLite results should be discarded.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
For a given hardware, there’s usually about a 5 to 20% performance hit when running Ubuntu in Android. The exception is GK802 where running Ubuntu in Android is consistently faster than running it natively. However, Ian used Geekbuying Ubuntu beta image which is not optimized, and it’s possible the CPU in Ubuntu was clocked at a lower frequency than in Android.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
MK802+ (AllWinner A10) and MK803 (AMLogic AML8726) share the lowest score, except for SQLite which runs the slowest on the Chromebook, and CLOMP on ODROID-U2. UG802 (Rockchip RK3066) and GK802 (Freescale i.MX6) has similar performance with an edge for Rockchip RK3066 devices, except for test where all 4-core of i.MX6 can be used such as 7-Zip. Also note that the extra 2GB RAM in iStick A200 does not provide significant performance improvement for most test against the 1GB RAM used in UG802. The extra RAM should only be useful when multitasking.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To conclude, if you want to run Linux on your mini PC, you should always install Ubuntu natively to get the most performance, but if you have no choice (i.e. Linux not currently supported) or want to run both Android and Linux simultaneously, you can always run server applications in a chroot with limited performance degradation. On the hardware side, although Rockchip RK3066 and Freescale i.MX6 mini PC have about the same performance in Linux for (server applications), Rockchip devices clearly have a higher performance / cost ratio at the moment.</div>

Dozens of Nexus 7 replicas have been surfaced previously, but this white 7-inch tablet from Chinese knockoff manufacture seems to the best replica yet. It has a code-name of “Fu-Shi-Lai 760″, sports the same high-definition display as Google’s Nexus 7 — a 7-inch 1280×800 display with 216ppi. Besides, there are microSD card slots, dual-cameras and dual-SIM card slots that Nexus 7 doesn’t include. Find out more after the break…</div>

The tablet has built-in antenna that supports 3G network, compatible with WCDMA at 2,100MHz frequency band. And it’s surprising to hear there’s dual SIM card slots! The battery capacity of this tablet is the about the same as Nexus 7, which squeezed a hefty 4,000 mAh battery into the machine. No word on pricing yet, and it should comes with two color options black and white.</div>

Chinese counterfeit smartphone makers have reportedly produced a high quality fake version of the iPad mini, which called — the ‘mini Pad’. The counterfeit tablet has an almost identical appearance and users are able to make phone calls with the device. The picture shows that its connector resembles Apple’s lightning connector. The mini Pad features the same 7.9-inch screen but it comes in two versions with different CPU, a dual-core MT6577 and quad-core MT6588, both processing chip from MediaTek which support phone calls. And the installed operating system is of course Android with highly imitate iOS skin. We think that the add-on of telephony support is kind of awkward, you’re going to stick an almost 8-inch slate on your face for phone talking. The counterfeit maker has some unusual mindset that they might think is practical for this… One more pic after the jump.</div>

The mobile operating system is competing with other such mobile operating systems including<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Firefox OS<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>and Tizen. Canonical recently released the Developer Preview for Ubuntu Touch supporting a whole host of new phones.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 1.571em; padding: 0px;">
The good news for Sony Xperia fans is that this preview is running on both the Xperia S and Xperia T. There are currently three categories showing how well each preview is working: 1) Running fine, 2) Sort of working and 3) Work in progress. The Xperia devices are sitting in category two showing that good progress is being made. Obviously, this preview will only appeal to those who are curious on Ubuntu Touch – the OS has no apps and functionality is limited in its current state. You can keep an eye on progress<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices#Sort_of_working" style="color: #2361a1; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

Chinese chip maker Allwinner is launching a new quad-core processor aimed at tablets with 5 to 7 inch displays and cellular capabilities. For reasons that are beyond my control, people seem to like to call these things phablets, and it looks like allwinner wants in on the growing space.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
The company’s new Allwinner A31s processor is a lot like the Allwinner A-31 chip that launched recently, but it has extra features designed to support wireless data chips for 2G, 3G, and 4G connectivity, as well as NFC, FM, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<img alt="Allwinner A31s" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-53378" height="339" src="http://liliputing.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/a31s.jpg" style="border: 0px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="574" /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
The Allwinner A31s is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor with PowerVR SGX 544 graphics and support for 2160p video decoding.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
Charbax from ARMDevices<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://draft.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4870036932102042587" style="text-decoration: none;">caught up with Allwinner at Mobile World Congress</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>this week to talk about the latest chips, and he also got a look at a press release and spec sheet that I haven’t seen online yet.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
Those documents may not be entirely accurate — for instance, they say the A31s supports Android 4.2 and Windows 8… but Windows 8 doesn’t run on ARM-based devices. You need Windows RT for that.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
So I’m taking some of the specs with a grain of salt, such as the support for devices with 1024 x 768 pixel displays. I have a hard time believing that a quad-core chip with SGX 544 graphics can’t support higher resolutions.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
But the spec sheet also mentions support for cameras with 5MP image sensors and support for 1080p output over an HDMI connection, which seems more reasonable.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
We should know more about the Allwinner A31s chips by the time they hit the market in March.</div>
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #222222; display: inline !important; float: none; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">- See more at: http://liliputing.com/2013/02/allwinner-launches-quad-core-a31s-cpu-for-phablets.html#sthash.vfE2bCCU.dpuf</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4870036932102042587.post-70615524305505643912013-02-21T06:57:00.000-08:002013-02-21T06:57:00.230-08:00Sony to launch Android, iOS apps for PlayStation 4 second screen experience<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">

In other words, Sony isn’t trying to compete with Android-based game consoles like the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://draft.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4870036932102042587" style="color: purple; text-decoration: initial;">Ouya</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>or<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://draft.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4870036932102042587" style="color: purple; text-decoration: initial;">GameStick</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>devices which use Android-based hardware to play Android-based games.</div>

The PS4 is more like a high-powered gaming PC with an AMD 8-core Jaguar processor, a high-powered Radeon graphics engine, and 8GB of RAM. Something tells me PS4 games will look a little better than Ouya games — and they’ll likely cost a lot more too.</div>

<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
ST-Ericsson unveiled their latest 2.5GHz NovaThor L8580 CPU earlier in this year, but the company is now readying to showcase an even faster version of the chip at MWC 2013.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
<img height="352" src="http://cdn.gsmarena.com/vv/newsimg/13/01/st-ericsson-novathor-l8580/gsmarena_001.jpg" style="border: 1px solid rgb(217, 205, 204); font-size: 13px; font: inherit; margin: 2px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The four Cortex A9 cores residing in the NovaThor L8580 (or eQuad, as it's also dubbed) that's going to be on display at MWC are going to be clocked at 3GHz. In order to not drain the battery in a heartbeat, ST-Ericsson have build the chipset using the 28nm FD-SOI manufacturing technology.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The company has also utilized ModAp, which optimizes the execution of apps and as a result runs them up to 35% faster. The chip comes with support for dual cameras (of up to 20MP), HD Voice and LTE. The GPU is going to be of the PowerVR SGX544 variety clocked at 600MHz.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
Naturally, the 3GHz NovaThor L8580 CPU in question is just a prototype at the moment, but hopefully, we'll get to play with it in Barcelona and put it through some benchmarking.</div>

<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
But this week Google released a software update for the Nexus 4 that AnandTech reports<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://draft.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4870036932102042587" style="color: purple; text-decoration: initial;">removes that unofficial feature</a>.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<img alt="Google Nexus 4" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-50567" height="372" src="http://liliputing.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/n4_022.jpg" style="border: 0px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="340" /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
The good news is that the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://draft.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4870036932102042587" style="color: purple; text-decoration: initial;">Android 4.2.2 update</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>does <em>add</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>features as well, including the ability to quickly toggle WiFi and Bluetooth from the quick settings panel, and Bluetooth audio fixes.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
But if you’re wondering why Google would bother updating the baseband and firmware on the Nexus 4 to <em>remove</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>a feature, it’s because the phone was never meant to be used with 4G LTE mobile broadband anyway.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
The only reason there’s an LTE chip under the hood is because the Nexus 4 is basically a rebranded LG Optimus G with a slightly different case design, and it was probably simpler for LG to use the same design than to retool all the internal bits.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
But Google and LG never applied for regulatory approval to use the Nexus 4 on 4G networks. So the companies had two choices: apply for those approvals or disable the functionality. Since the Nexus 4 didn’t have very good support for LTE anyway (it only supports a limited range set of bands and can’t, for instance, be used on AT&T’s network in the US), it probably made more sense just to include the LTE-killing feature in the software update.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
So if you’re currently using a Nexus 4 on a 4G LTE network, you might want to avoid updating to Android 4.2.2. There aren’t a lot of reasons to upgrade anyway, since it’s a pretty minor update.</div>

It appears that the M7 name which HTC's chairman Peter Chou<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>shouted last week<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>might only be an internal moniker. A fresh report has emerged from Twitter's highly accurate tipster @evleaks, pointing that the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>upcoming Taiwanese flagship<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>will simply be named HTC One when it goes official in less than two weeks.</div>

The idea behind the simple naming convention is to reportedly highlight the smartphone's role as a hero device from HTC. Of course, the question for the names of other HTC handsets, scheduled for release this year remains to be answered.</div>

The first two smartphones to ship with the BlackBerry 10 OS are a the
touchscreen-only BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10 smartphone with a
QWERTY keyboard.<br />
<img alt="bb10 z10" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52639" height="370" src="http://liliputing.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/bb10-z10.jpg" width="420" /><br />
The BlackBerry Z10 will have a 4.2 inch, 1280 x 768 pixel, 356 ppi
display, a 1.5 GHZ Qualcomm Snadpragon S4 Plus dual-core processor, 2GB
of RAM, and 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot for extra space.<br />
It has an 8MP rear camera, and a 2MP front-facing camera.<br />
BlackBerry says the Z10 will retail for about $150 with a 3-year
contract in Canada. Prices will vary by region, and the phone will be
available January 31st in the UK, in early February in Canada and the
United Arab Emirates. It should hit the US in March.<br />
Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Q10 has a smaller 3.1 inch, 330ppi display —
but it has a dual-core processor, a full physical keyboard beneath the
screen, which makes it feel more like a traditional BlackBerry
smartphone.<br />
<img alt="q10_04" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52638" height="403" src="http://liliputing.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/q10_04.jpg" width="474" /><br />
Most modern smartphone makers have left QWERTY keyboards behind — or
moved to slide-out keyboards. But continuing to offer a phone with a
keyboard is probably a smart move for BlackBerry, since it’s one of the
features that’s helped define the company — and dropping it entirely
would probably alienated long-time fans (I hear there are still some of
those left).<br />
Both phones will run the new BlackBerry 10 software, which is
optimized for touch in a way that earlier BlackBerry software never was.
The company is emphasizing touch-based gestures including a new “Peek”
feature which lets you slide your thumb to preview incoming email
messages without exiting you current app — so you can keep playing a
video, for instance, while checking your inbox.<br />
The company also put a lot of work into the new on-screen keyboard,
which features strong text prediction, among other things, to offer a
good typing experience even on a touch-only phone like the BlackBerry
Z10. There’s also a new video editor built into BlackBerry 10 called
BlackBerry Story Maker.<br />
BlackBerry has a strong reputation for making business-friendly
phones, and among other new features in BB10 is something called
BlackBerry Balance — which lets users create separate profiles for work
and personal use. So you can associate certain apps, data, and other
information with your work profile, but maintain your personal contacts,
games, and other apps on the same device.<br />
<img alt="bbm video" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52643" height="342" src="http://liliputing.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/bbm-video.jpg" width="600" /><br />
BlackBerry 10 also now offers support for BBM Video and BBM Screen
Share, which lets you make video calls using the BlackBerry Messenger
service — or share your screen over an internet connection, so you hold a
meeting on your phone by making a voice call and letting the person
you’re talking to see the same photos, documents, or presentations as
you’re looking at on your handset.<br />

10 launches today, and there are already more than 70 thousand apps
available for the platform. That includes mobile apps such as Skype,
Facebook, Twitter, Kindle, and Angry Birds.<br />

The company says there are more than a thousand “top” apps already
available in the new BlackBerry World… which gives the new platform a
bit of a leg up on some competing mobile operating systems which often
launch with few apps available.<br />
In fact, Ubuntu Phone OS won’t even have an app store when it
launches. Instead the folks at Canonical plan to focus first on the core
apps that will come built-in, adding support for a third-party app
store down the line.<br />
One of the reasons BlackBerry 10 has such a large amount of apps at
launch is that the company made it easy for Android app developers to
port their apps to run on BB10. In fact, many Android apps can run
virtually unmodified. They just need to be repackaged as Android apps.<br />
During a recent port-a-thon, developers ported 19,000 apps in just one weekend.<br />
That said, there will also be many native apps including media apps, games, business apps, travel, health, and finance apps.<br />
BlackBerry World is also now a place to purchase music and videos in addition to apps — the company says there are movies and TV shows from 8 studios and all the major US music labels.<br />
Whether any of those new apps, or the new operating system and
hardware are enough to convince customers to stick with (or switch to)
BlackBerry remains to be seen. There are an awful lot of excellent
choices in the smartphone space at this point.</div>

Chip maker Qualcomm just announced a new range of ARM-based processors for phones and tablets earlier this month. But the company is already working on chips that are even more powerful — and Android Police obtained the leaked documents to prove it.<br />
<a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/01/30/leak-meet-qualcomms-ridiculous-apq8084-processor-2-3ghz-quad-core-adreno-420-gpu-h-265-video-ultra-fast-802-11ac-and-more/"><img alt="Qualcomm APQ8084" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52661" height="248" src="http://liliputing.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/8084.jpg" width="578" /></a><br />
The Qualcomm APQ8084 is a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor based on the
same Qualcomm Krait design as the Snapdragon 600 and 800 series
processors due out in mid-2013. But not only does the APQ8084 have a
faster CPU speed, it’s also the first chip to ship with Adreno 420
graphics.<br />
That will be the fastest graphics processor from Qualcomm to date,
and the first to feature support for hardware-accelerated decoding of
H.265 videos.<br />
Additionally, the chipset can handle up to 2 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0
connections, 802.11ac WiFi, and cameras with up to 30MP sensors.<br />
Android Police speculates that we’ll first see the 28nm chip in
tablets, or possibly even laptops. But it could eventually find its way
to future smartphones as well. We won’t see it in any devices at all
until 2014 at the soonest, though.<br />

things are going to be happening throughout 2013: devices are going to
get ever larger and we’re going to see more and more pixels packed into
our mobile displays. 1080p was super-shiny and new only a few months ago
but now, it looks like it’s fast becoming old news with everyone
getting in on the Full HD game. Now, it’s Pantech’s turn to show the
world their 1080p offering to the world and its a little different from
everything else we’ve seen so far; the Pantech Vega No.6.<br />
You might know Pantech as a brand of smartphones on AT&T but
while the smartphones on Ma Bell aren’t spectacular in South Korea, they
produce some stunning devices and with the Vega No. 6 they’re pushing
the boundaries of not only size but, screen resolution. Pantech’s latest
phone comes in at 5.9-inches and packs in that all important resolution
of 1920 x 1080 – one of the first phones to do so at this sort of size.
Take a look at the full specs below:<br />
<ul>
<li>5.9-inch IPS LCD panel with 1920 x 1080 resolution</li>
<li>1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU</li>
<li>2 GB of RAM</li>
<li>32 GB of on-board storage with MicroSDXC support up to a <em>crazy</em> 2 TB</li>
<li>Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Pantech’s Flux UX</li>
<li>13 MP rear-facing camera with 2 MP front-facing camera</li>
<li>4G LTE</li>
<li>Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n</li>
<li>Bluetooth 4.0, NFC</li>
<li>3,140 mAh battery</li>
<li>158.6 x 83.2 x 9.9 mm dimensions</li>
<li>209 grams weight</li>
</ul>
<a href="http://androidheadlines.com/2013/01/pantech-make-the-no-6-official-5-9-inches-of-full-hd.html/pantech-vega-no-6" rel="attachment wp-att-241585"><img alt="Pantech-Vega-No.-6" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241585" height="327" src="http://androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Pantech-Vega-No.-6.jpg" width="600" /></a><br />
Looking at the spec sheet alone, it looks like Pantech has enough to
keep up with its competitors in the 1080p game but, as we head into
2013, keeping up isn’t going to be good enough. After all, the Galaxy S
IV and HTC M7 are upcoming devices that should hopefully have some
better specs aside from that brilliant screen resolution. Having said
that, the Vega No. 6 does have a few things going for it, in that it has
excellent support for external storage and it’s one of the first phones
beyond 5-inches to pack in a resolution above 720p.<br />
<a href="http://androidheadlines.com/2013/01/pantech-make-the-no-6-official-5-9-inches-of-full-hd.html/pantech-vega-no-6-2" rel="attachment wp-att-241586"><img alt="Pantech-Vega-No.-6-2" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241586" height="330" src="http://androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Pantech-Vega-No.-6-2.jpg" width="600" /></a><br />
It’s clear that Pantech is looking to rely on size to sell its latest
handset but, will that be enough for the South Korean manufacturer? As
with a lot of phones out of Asia, we have no idea whether or not this
will make it to the U.S. or anywhere else for that matter. Often,
Pantech devices have ended up on AT&T but with the popularity of the
5.5-inch Galaxy Note II it’d be hard for the carrier to sell two
massive devices like this.<br />
